Aye Write festival saved, 13th Note could reopen as staff win tribunal, Uber death driver pleads guilty, Subway perv jailed + Partick restaurant named Glasgow's best
â Good morning Glasgow. Plenty happening today. Hereâs Wednesdayâs Wrap:
đ” Former workers of the 13th Note music venue have won an employment tribunal nine months after its closure. A judge ruled they should each be paid 90 days wages â the maximum protective award available - after it was ruled their employer broke the law when making them redundant without notice. Staff say they now plan to reopen the venue. - Amanda Keenan has the full story in todayâs Glasgow Times.
âź The Unite union called it âa complete vindication. Nick Troy, lead Unite rep at the venue, said:Â
âWe unionised to win a fairer and safer workplace at 13th Note but our employer did everything it could to stop us, including closing our workplace. When it came to sacking us, the company didnât even have the decency to inform us first - issuing a press release to the media before telling the workers that they had lost their jobs. With justice served, we can now turn our focus onto taking the venue back into workersâ hands so that Glasgow has a unionised bar and music venue that pays and treats its workers with respect.â
đ The Aye Write literary festival will go ahead this year after an âunexpectedâ donation from the charitable foundation established by the late Euromillions winner, Colin Weir. Organisers said last month they had been forced to cancel after a bid to secure ÂŁ77,500 from Creative Scotland was rejected. Tickets are due to go back on sale at 10am today. - Andrew Learmonth has all the details, exclusively in The Herald this morning.
âWe are pleased to be able to support Aye Write to put on a programme of great events in 2024. It was unthinkable that Aye Write should be silenced until next year. Happily, the donation means that wonât be the case.â - The Colin Weir Charitable Foundation.
