The Glasgow Wrap 🗞 Tuesday 17 September 2024
Collegelands development update, body found in search for missing man, Commonwealth Games chatter, campaign to save listed Hillhead church + happy birthday SOPHIE
🌞 Good morning Glasgow. The Met Office forecasts sunshine with a high of 20C. Summer has come at last..! It’s a bit quiet today so you’ll be caught up in a flash this morning. Here’s Tuesday’s Wrap:
🏢 Plans have been lodged for the £95 million “final piece” of the Collegelands housing project after 20 years as a gap site. - Brian Donnelly, The Herald.
↳ Plans include 591 student beds, 147 rented apartments, a contemporary arts centre and a 2.5-acre park.
🚨 A body was found on Coille-eughain hill in Luss after two weeks of searching for missing Pollok man Darren Pollock. - Rebecca Newlands, Glasgow Times.
🏅 We are still waiting on official word about hosting a “scaled-back” Commonwealth Games. Here’s what folk had to say about the potential 2026 event:
↳ Glasgow Times reporter Kirsty Feerick asked Glaswegians what they thought about the Games returning to the city. Opinions were divided on the subject but overall positive.
↳ Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar told STV News it would be ‘a shot in the arm for a struggling city that has been badly let down’. - Craig Meighan.
↳ Meanwhile, Kristy Dorsey of The Herald said: “…it's no surprise there is limited appetite to commit to hosting a major sporting event that historically has been a financial gamble at the best of times.”
🏛 A petition by SAVE Britain’s Heritage calling on the Scottish Government to step in and stop the “unjust” demolition of historic buildings will be considered by parliament. - Jordan Shepherd, Glasgow Live.
⛪ Meanwhile, MSP Paul Sweeney has launched a campaign to save the B-listed Hillhead Baptist Church (Cranworth Street) from demolition. Developers want to replace the 1883 building by Thomas L. Watson with a block of flats. See the planning objection.
🍸 The Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice in Bellahouston Park has been granted an alcohol licence despite concerns raised by health chiefs. - Drew Sandelands, Local Democracy Reporter, Glasgow Live.
↳ The new licence allows alcohol to be provided at conferences, corporate events and fundraisers “under its own roof” rather than renting other venues.
🍺 Rangers pub 3 Cheers has been warned by licencing chiefs after Union Bears supporters group members left the premise “in hoods and balaclavas” ahead of clashing with Tottenham Hotspur supporters. - Drew Sandelands, Local Democracy Reporter, Glasgow Live.
🎂 Today would have been musician, DJ and producer SOPHIE’s 38th birthday. Google Doodle has paid tribute to the late artist. Youtube.
