The Glasgow Zine Library all started with a band t-shirt. “I discovered zines at a really crucial point in my adolescence,” LD Davis says. It was back when you had to mail-order merchandise from your favourite bands. On this occasion, Davis’s Alkaline Trio t-shirt came with a free zine.

“I remember reading through it and being like, I have no idea what I’m looking at,” they recalled. It opened their eyes to the world of self-publishing that went hand in hand with the DIY music scene that they were a part of. Unlike traditional magazines, zines have a strong do-it-yourself ethos. There are no rules when it comes to making your own. Rooted in fanzines, the practice dates back to the early 20th century.
